ADHD, Structure and Accountability

There are a lot of things I could write about. That’s part of my problem in getting something written. Each idea is like a shiny object. And, they all seem to spin a bit like a mobile. I asked for help from my mastermind group yesterday, and came up with a plan – and accountability. I’ll spend no more than an hour on a post. And, it will be completed and sent to my VA within that hour.

We do have a lot to say. I know I do. And, how can I get it to you if I allow myself to simply spin my ideas around in my head. I heard another ADHD coach say this, “My trouble is I come up with an idea, or two or three etc. And I figure it out in my head”. (You know that double edge sword of being able to see the big picture). The outcome for her was, “Once I know the ending, it’s like reading a book, why bother with the middle”.

I can tell her why bother… because there are plenty of people out there that could benefit from illumination of the path, that middle part that might seem tedious or mundane. I believe she would benefit from having a structure that would hold her attention through completion. And, that’s what I’ve given myself.

Need to get something written? Put some structure around it. For me knowing I’ve given myself an hour to complete this post, somehow (and it is a mystery to me that I really don’t need to solve) I’m staying on track. I’m focused. In a way this post is writing itself. This isn’t as difficult as I could make it. With my last post (the first one I did this way) I actually took an hour and a half. (Hey, they’re my rules). I’ll tell you though; I was kind of digging in my heels. Lock me in and I’m feeling pulled to kick down the door. What a waste of time.

Got a goal? Come up with a way to accomplish it. And, then, and this is key, trust that what you came up with will work. And, take action. If you don’t like the results, they’re your rules, your methods, change them. Make them fit you. And, or, look down at your feet. Are they flat on the floor? Or, are you making dents in it with your heels. Relax; settle your feet on the ground. (One solid on the ground is okay if you just have to cross your legs). And, try again. What you come up with, trust. I haven’t talked a lot about intuition. And, you’ll find as a creative, ADHD woman, it can be one of your most valuable assets!

And, I’m done in 40 minutes! Time left to review, edit and get it to Agnes, my VA. I’d thought I was going to talk to you about the virtues of having a VA. (Well that was one of the shiny topics in my head). And, believe me I will tell you. Agnes has been one of the greatest blessings I’ve had in a long time. I’m tempted to keep going. And, you may just see some shiny object. So, I really am done now, for now.

I do want to invite your comments, thoughts, and requests. Shoot me an email or comment here on this post. What would you like to hear about? What aren’t you finding help with as you search the Internet? I’d love to hear from you.

Yes, You Do Know Enough!

Have you been tempted to let go of your dreams, your business? Has your second-guessing kicked up a notch? Many of you are service professionals – coaches, consultants, therapists and trainers. You may hear, people aren’t looking for services right now, not spending money. And, they are absolutely out of their minds.

Now is a time that you may be vulnerable to slipping into self-doubt. If you’ve started looking for more classes, more experts or more research, self-doubt is attempting to creep in. Believe me, I know, I’m vulnerable to it too! Now is the time to acknowledge your accomplishments, what you know and what you have to share!

You might consider this, increase your self confidence by writing down what you are capable of doing. I’m not suggesting a quasi CV or resume. And, don’t be shy either. Stretch yourself. Look at your skills, expertise, experience, etc and get creative about what you have to share. Include what you think you could do and how you might do it.

A few years ago, I responded to a RFP. The request was for a mental health consultant. The task was a bit of a shift for me. They wanted someone to assess, review, and revise a preschool education program to ensure optimal mental health for all. (We don’t take small bites do we?) The program needed to be in compliance with mandates that required overall integration of mental health from administration – staff (teaching and support) children, parents and the community.

I did win the contract. And, the greater gift for me was this, by looking at my expertise using a different perspective, I saw myself, my abilities, knowledge, experience, etc in a new way. I was amazed. Amaze yourself. Take some time now to write out your gifts. Really allow yourself to see what, until now you haven’t fully seen. You’re needed right now! It’s time to show up.

Dancing, Chi and ADHD

Wanna know why you feel old?

You don’t dance anymore! You heard me – YOU DON’T DANCE ANYMORE!

After getting some work done that needed quiet, I headed to the kitchen for lunch with one quick detour to get some music started. I played side one of KD Lange and, nothing against KD Lange, her music is great. It’s just that Shadowlands wasn’t the upbeat tone I wanted to hear. So, instead of checking out side two, I put on Glen Frey. He knows how to rock! The first song was upbeat and fun reminding me of this thing
about movement I’ve been wanting to share.

Almost any kind of dancing I’ve done, and happy to admit that includes disco, does a great job on the joints. What does that have to do with anything? It has to do with the ease that energy flows through your body. Chi or Qi, however you spell it, is the life force that flows through all of us. It’s a force that you can let stagnate or allow to flow smoothly, effortlessly. Which ever you choose, is completely related to the amount of energy and liveliness you feel. And, one of the prime places that Chi stagnates are joints.

I stayed away from formal settings that taught Chi related activity. The instructors I’ve experienced seemed anything but warm and fuzzy. Oddly what I’d expected to flow seemed rigid. Until recently. First, I tried not to personalize the leaders behavior. Then, I just relaxed. That’s always good! When this militaristic instructor said (after about 6 sessions) once we get the idea of moving Chi, we don’t have to stick with any particular
movements. I was in shock, and thrilled to death. Yes, I am affected by what people say.

So I came home that day and put on some good old rock and roll. And, just started to move. Yes, I took my moves from what I learned in class. And, I’ll tell you the only thing you need to know. Move your joints without straining the muscles. And, you’re good to go. In the 80’s there were some dances that were more or less bouncing up and down. One, I remember, and did at my wedding reception was the pogo! If you remember that, use that as a guide. With one difference – loosen your grip on your knees and ankles. Okay, so it’s no longer the POGO, big deal.

One of these days, with some encouragement, hint hint, I’ll make a video of just goofing and moving chi. And, you get the idea.

It's Okay to Be a Princess!

It’s okay to be a princess.

Yes.  It’s okay to be a princess.

And, having said, it’s okay to be a princess, I’m much more able to prioritize, choose, and act.  So, I decided I need to write this down, for me and for you.  Since it’s much too cold on this crisp fall morning to warm up my bathrobe, I’m snugged back under still toasty down comforters.  And, as my thoughts show up on my laptop I’m very clear.  I’m getting up for nothing until I’ve got my thoughts down and posted.

Some time, shortly after my last post I began to tell myself the same message I’ve gotten over the years from people who don’t know.  That is, that this princess and the pea sensitivity is something made up to get attention.  (Blasphemy!)  And, the whole princess and the pea notion is invalid.  (Wrong!)  Interesting choice of words since, ignoring your ADHD hypersensitivity is a sure way to become an invalid.  Dishonor yourself and your body will simply turn up the volume.

Question yourself, your nature, your purpose and you might as well throw up a cement wall.  And, that’s what happened.  I was going to say stop sign, but I know if I feel like it, well, I could just run that.  A road block, a little harder, but could be passed.  A cement wall? is, well, quite a bit more challenging.  And, one of the cool things about being an AD/HD princess is that anything that we might find in our path, we have the tools to pass.  You don’t believe in the word no, right?

The truth that is critical to remember is this.  You can’t change being a princess any more than you can change your genetics.  Your super-sensitivity is a factor of your AD/HD.  And, your ADHD is in your genes.

Are you, or do you question your nature?

How’s the volume in your body?  What’s it saying?

Is it humming along?  Is it yelling, whining, or digging in?

And, if it’s quiet, is it because your aren’t listening?
